The recently restored El
Presidio Chapel in
Santa Barbara was the
location for the Gold
Coast third annual
meeting March 28.

Following the business
meeting, the 50 atten-
dees heard featured
speaker Rich Wiggins,
Senior Information
Technologist at Michi-
gan State University,
talk about the chal-

enges of predicting
internet futures.  Mr.
Wiggin's thought pro-
voking and entertaining
words included showing
technological gadgets.
After a delightful lunch
at El Paseo Historic
Restaurant, members
toured el Presidio
Research Center, Santa
Barbara Historical Soci-
ety Gledhill Library,
and the Santa Barbara
Mission Archives.

At the business meeting,
outgoing Chair John
Murray reminded mem-
bers that we need to
maintain the network
structure, including
communication among
members during this
period of reduced state
funding for the Library

of California.  Incoming
Chair Carol Keator con-
gratulated John on his
outstanding work this
year, presenting him
with a engraved gavel
from the Network.

Chair John Murray, chats with Claudia Scott,
Judith Segel, and Incoming Chair Carol
Keator.

UCSB Outreach Program Sponsors Teachers Guide
Gold Coast has been
awarded a $20,700 grant
from the UCSB Chancel-
lor's Outreach Program
to create and distribute
a Library and Informa-
tion Resource Guide for
K-12 teachers in San
Luis Obispo, Santa Bar-
bara, and Ventura
counties.  The
guide will include tradi-
tional library collection
listings as well as other
resources of interest to
teachers, including mu-
seums, special collec-
tions, and local projects.
The resource guide will
be distributed to all
teachers in Region VII
in September, and an
online version will be
available via the Gold
Coast website.  The pro-
ject is part of this year's
campaign to attract
more school libraries
to join the Network.
