The Gold Coast Library Network (GCLN) Scholarship Award was established in 2009 to support aspiring librarians and library staff. The scholarship was originally given to one or two students enrolled in a library related program.

In 2013 the GCLN Board decided to broaden the scholarship award to include library employees working in a GCLN library. In 2017 the GCLN Board decided to increase the scholarship amount from $400 to $600 each. This competitive program now provides two $500 scholarships, one for an MLS/MLIS student and one for a GCLN library employee.


The purpose of the scholarship is to help support those seeking to become part of the library profession and those already in the library profession and to provide them with an opportunity to increase their knowledge and skills in the theoretical and/or practical aspects of librarianship. A library school student can use the scholarship to help pay for their education (including books, classes and other school expenses) or to assist them in attending a professional conference. A current employee working at a GCLN library can use the scholarship for professional development activities including attendance at classes, conferences and webinars.


Submission deadline is May 1, 2019.

Applications will be reviewed and awards communicated by Friday, May 31, 2019.

For the student scholarship, at the time of application, applicants must:

  • live or work in the Tri-County area (San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Ventura counties);
  • be enrolled at least part time in an ALA-accredited master’s of library and information science or information studies program;
  • show evidence of a commitment to librarianship and developing as a librarian

For the employee scholarship, at the time of application, applicants must:

  • work at a GCLN library;
  • show evidence of a commitment to library work and furthering their skill and knowledge as a library employee
