Santa Barbara City College is a comprehensive community college serving the south coast of Santa Barbara County. Established in 1909, SBCC is renowned as one of the leading two-year community college in California – and the nation. The Eli Luria Library, named after benefactor Eli Luria, was built in 1989. The Luria Library offers a dynamic, innovative, and exciting place for students to learn. The Luria Library responds to the needs and learning styles of today’s student, helping them achieve their learning outcomes, enrich their lives, establish careers, and see the value of libraries in relationship to their learning. A tag line was created in 2007, with faculty and student input, to help focus this new vision: Explore. Learn. Grow. In January 2011, the Luria Library won the ACRL Excellence in Academic Libraries Award.
The Luria Resident is generously funded by The Luria Foundation. This is an opportunity for a recent library school graduate to explore community college librarianship by working in all areas of an award-winning community college library. This is a temporary part-time position and will be completed between January 21, 2014 – May 23, 2014 with the possibility for an extension into the following academic year.
Possession of a Master’s Degree from an accredited institution in Library Science, Library and Information Science that was awarded in the last two years.
A career interest in community college librarianship.
Excellent interpersonal and written and verbal communication skills.; adaptable to a rapidly changing environment, and ability to collaborate with various departmental service units.
Energetic, innovative, and flexible.

Amanda Grundmann is this year’s Employee Scholarship winner. She currently works at UCSB Library’s Interlibrary Loan department. Her goal is to work as an instruction librarian in an academic library, focusing on instructional design and services to distance education students. She will use the scholarship to attend the American Library Association Annual Conference in Chicago. There she will attend sessions and present the ALA New Members Round Table, Student Chapter of the Year Award.
Jodie Jonsson has been awarded our Student Scholarship. She is a reprographics technician at Cuesta College Library who also volunteers at the Morro Bay Library. As a long-time library patron, she finds library work extremely fulfilling. Jodie will use the scholarship to purchase needed textbooks and supplies to complete her Associate’s Degree in Library Technology at Cuesta College. She hopes to use this degree to find a full-time position at a local academic or public library.
Join the Gold Coast Library Network for our Annual Meeting at the Santa Barbara Public Library, as we focus on the timely topic of emergency and disaster preparedness and response in libraries. Learn from presentations by colleagues and first responders on how to deal with fires, active shooters, and other emergency situations. We encourage you to bring questions and share your experiences.
