There was a total of 26 surveys submitted:  Academic 5, Public 5, School 8, Special 8. Although it

may not be readily apparent from the rankings below, based on the rankings and comments, there

were two basic sets of similar expectations: 1) Academic and Public, and 2) School and Special.

In their comments the Special Libraries sent forth a loud and clear message that they see the

Library of California as a vehicle to automation of their collections which would lead to connectivity

to other libraries.

Results of the survey were fairly close among academic, public, and school responses. The special

library returns were more varied in their expectations. This may be due to the fact that the first three

categories have common denominators within their categories, e.g., funding, governing bodies,

partnerships, whereas the Special libraries are more likely to be solo entities.

Group purchasing was ranked as number one by academic, public, and school. Expanded resources

and continuing education tied for second. It should be noted that academic and schools rated

continuing education number one whereas public rated training above continuing ed. It may be a

matter of semantics or it may be that the term continuing ed has a different connotation for academics

and schools than it does for public libraries. If training and continuing ed are taken as one item, the

combination would rank third.

The special libraries' main concerns were expanded resources, funding, and continuing education.

The survey form will continue to be distributed at various Region VII meetings and it is still available online.
