TECHNICAL SUPPORT SPECIALIST
Full time, $18.25/hr with benefits; $37,960.00 per year.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: This position is a full time position (40 hours per week) with an annual salary of $37,960.00. Benefits include, but are not limited to, a yearly health insurance allowance of $3,204 to cover mandatory health insurance (PERS) and optional benefits or cash back in lieu of options; vacation (approximately 14 days per year); nine (9) paid scheduled holiday dates; one (1) personal floating holiday; sick leave (approximately 10 days per year); employee assistance program; and retirement coverage offered through the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS). Effective July 8, 2002, the entire employee retirement contribution of 7% is paid by Black Gold. A deferred compensation program and a long-term care insurance program are available at the employee's option.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Under the general supervision of the Automation Manager, the Technical Support Specialist provides technical support for the network that connects Black Gold member libraries to the main computer; shares responsibility for PCs and PC networks that form part of the Black Gold automation system, and provides support for other libraries. Some evening and weekend work may be required. Travel from library to library on the Central Coast of California is also required.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
1. Assists member libraries with problems with equipment, diagnostic evaluation and repair of equipment primarily through telephone support. Serves as technical consultant for telecommunications and refers matters beyond expertise to Automation Manager.
2. Monitors daily operations to ensure that a high degree of reliability and availability of the network is maintained. Analyzes telecommunications activity reports and informs Automation Manager of analysis results and potential projects.
3. Maintains documentation related to changes in the telecommunications configurations, diagnostics and equipment.
4. Installs telecommunications hardware in libraries when appropriate and in the computer room under the direction of the Automation Manager.
5. Reports problems to telephone companies related to T1, frame relay circuits, keeping the Automation Manager informed of problems and status of trouble calls.
6. Communicates with the library system vendors on issues related to Internet access, firewalls, transaction logging, dial-in problems and enhancements, in consultation with the Automation Manager.
7. Monitors network security and works with vendors to maintain security.
8. Maintains Internet accessibility via Black Gold for member libraries working with ISP and phone companies. Troubleshoots problems with Internet access through the Black Gold network.
9 Serves as Project Manager to implement applicable new modules in library automation system. Schedules activities, completes tasks, tests and reports results to Automation Manager.
10. In collaboration with the Library Automation Technician, becomes cross-trained on critical aspects of the automated library system. Runs batch jobs and statistical reports as assigned.
11. Assists with the implementation and upgrades to the telecommunications network as determined by the Automation Manager and assists with upgrades to the library automation system software.
12. Provides training to member libraries on basic problem solving for telecommunications as directed by the Automation Manager. Prepares training materials when necessary.
13. Participates in the ongoing review, development and drafting of policies, procedures and operations manuals.
14. Carries a cell phone on a rotating basis established by the Automation Manager. Responds to calls after hours as needed to resolve critical situations.
15. Performs occasional weekend or evening work for major network or system administration and upgrades.
16. Shift work may be required as work flow and priorities change for Black Gold.
17. Assists with recovery in the case of catastrophic failure of network or system hardware or software.
18. In the absence of the Automation Manager and Automation Technician, assumes responsibility necessary to assure a continued flow of service and system reports, working in conjunction with the System Director for non-routine matters.
19. Performs related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge: Substantial knowledge of personal computers and general computer science, understanding of telecommunications equipment and current trends in telecommunications. Knowledge of computer applications, Internet access technology and firewalls is desirable. Knowledge of library operations is useful.
Education: A Bachelor of Science degree in computer science or related field. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted. Interest in obtaining CCNA designation.
Experience: Two years of varied responsible experience in computer operations with hardware, software and PCs. Experience with and interest in libraries or library automation strongly desired.
Ability: Communicate with library staff and vendors, strong follow-up skills, excellent organizational skills, interest in libraries and associated technology. Must be able to begin a project and see it through to completion. Need to maintain good relationships with a variety of people using good judgment, tact, and courtesy. Must work independently and as a member of a team. Must possess or be able to acquire a California driver’s license and have a good driving record.
