Job Description: AUTOMATION TECHNICIAN FOR LINKING PROJECT
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Under the direction of the Region VII Executive, incumbent coordinates the implementation of the Cat-A-Link Virtual Union Catalog and Interlibrary Loan System project. Following installation and implementation, incumbent will manage Cat-A-Link, future grant projects and web projects for Region VII. The Automation Technician will train library staff on the use and maintenance of Cat-A-Link and will provide consulting and ongoing technical support to member libraries. Some evening and weekend work including pager duty is required. Travel from library to library on the Central Coast of California is also required.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
1. Assists member libraries and vendor with implementation of Cat-A-Link Gold.
2. Surveys libraries to collect technical information for each Z39.50 server.
3. Coordinates workflow for resource sharing and delivery of materials.
4. Participates in policy development for resource sharing between participants.
5. Ensures completion of the implementation guide and profiles by participants.
6. Schedules and arranges meetings, site visits, installations and training.
7. Completes profiles, creates users in the system, edits help screen, and so forth.
8. Diagnoses and corrects problems, primarily through telephone support.
9. Serves as technical consultant for Cat-A-Link Gold for Region VII; refers matters beyond expertise to vendor for resolution.
10. Briefs Region VII Executive on library concerns/problems with Cat-A-Link Gold.
11. Provides ongoing technical support to members for Region VII technical projects
12. Reports Cat-A-Link Gold telecommunication problems to phone companies, etc.
13. Coordinates problem reporting to vendor, resolving locally if possible.
14. Updates documentation and distributes related to Cat-A-Link Gold as needed.
15. Teaches and trains library workers in the use and maintenance of Cat-A-Link Gold at the local library. Prepares training materials when necessary.
16. Carries a pager. Responds to pages including after office hours, evenings, weekends and holidays; works as needed to resolve trouble calls.
17. Performs occasional weekend and evening work for major system maintenance.
18. Assists Region VII Executive with special projects for member libraries.
19. Performs related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
MLS or equivalent library experience. Operational familiarity and at least two years experience with administration of Windows NT or UNIX systems; working knowledge of local area and wide area networks, Internet, Windows, networking protocols and Web administration; working knowledge of library operations and library automation. Written and oral communications skills including the ability to teach and speak to library staff and to outside groups. Possession of a valid California Driver=s Licence or ability to get one within 3 months of employment. Proof of identity and eligibility for employment in accordance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986.
